latest company news about Paperboard vs EVA Inserts for Cosmetic Packaging: How to Choose

Cover illustration: paperboard and EVA insert concepts. Final structure and materials depend on the project.

Choosing cosmetic packaging inserts starts with the product, not the box colour. A cream jar, glass serum bottle and fragrance set can need different support, even when their outer boxes look similar.

Paperboard and EVA are two options worth comparing. The better choice depends on filled weight, container shape, presentation, assembly and the conditions the packed box will face.

What does the insert need to do?

An insert should control movement without making the product difficult to remove. It also needs to keep the intended display position when the closed box is turned or handled.

Record the maximum dimensions and filled weight of every item. Include caps, pumps, droppers and decorative shoulders. A cavity based only on bottle diameter may leave the cap touching the lid or allow the bottle to tilt.

Decide whether the box is a retail carton, a gift set or a presentation box shipped inside another package. A display insert is not automatically a complete transport-protection system.

When is paperboard worth considering?

Folded paperboard can create compartments, platforms and retention tabs. It is useful when a brand wants the insert to coordinate with the printed box and prefers to reduce the number of material types in the package.

However, paperboard strength depends on its grade, thickness, folds and support points. A shallow platform with large unsupported openings may behave differently from a reinforced folded structure. Ask for a sample showing the actual product positions, not just an empty insert.

For an example of this approach, see our magnetic cosmetic packaging box with a cardboard insert.

When is EVA worth considering?

EVA foam can provide shaped cavities around irregular containers and a more continuous contact surface. It may suit a presentation that needs products held at specific depths or a dark interior around light-coloured items.

Thickness, firmness and cavity tolerances need to be matched to the product. A very tight cavity can make removal awkward; a loose one may permit movement. Surface coverings also change the appearance and fit, so they should be included in sample approval.

Compare the complete system

Decision Paperboard insert EVA insert
Product retention Often uses folds, tabs and compartments Often uses shaped cavities
Appearance Can coordinate with printed paper surfaces Can create a continuous foam interior
Assembly Folding and positioning may be needed Placement or fixing may be needed
Cost comparison Check tooling, reinforcement and assembly Check thickness, material usage and cutting
End-of-life review Assess coatings, adhesives and the full construction Assess material identification and separation from the box

Neither material is always cheaper or automatically more protective. Compare quotes using the same products, outer box, quantity and packing method. A paper insert with extra reinforcement may cost more than a simple foam insert, while another layout may reverse that result.

Five checks before approving a sample

  1. Close the box and confirm clearance above the tallest cap or pump.
  2. Check movement in the intended handling positions.
  3. Remove each item without pulling on a fragile component.
  4. Inspect folds, cavity edges and contact points for rubbing or marks.
  5. Evaluate the complete shipping pack using agreed handling and transport tests.

Use the approved sample to record insert material, construction, cavity sizes and any covering. If a product container changes, review the fit again.

Can one gift set use different insert solutions?

Yes. Separate areas can use different supports, but every additional component adds assembly and material-separation considerations. Start with the simplest structure that meets the agreed protection and presentation requirements.
