Why can quotes for the same cosmetic packaging box differ so much between suppliers?
The difference may come from the paper, box structure, insert or printing process. It may also depend on whether samples, tooling, assembly and shipping are included. Comparing the unit price alone can overlook details that affect the actual purchase cost.
To compare custom cosmetic packaging quotes, start by giving suppliers the same brief. Then check what each quote includes and which details remain provisional.
Provide product photographs, maximum dimensions and filled weights. Explain how many items go into each box and whether they should stand upright or lie flat.
A glass serum bottle, cream jar and pump container may need different retention methods. Include caps, droppers and pumps in the dimensions rather than providing only the bottle diameter.
If you already have a sample box, state whether its dimensions are internal or external. Board, wrapping paper and inserts occupy space in a rigid box, so identical outer dimensions do not guarantee identical usable space.
If the box size is undecided, share the product details and a reference layout. Ask the supplier to recommend dimensions, then confirm the actual fit during sampling. Our skincare gift set packaging design guide can help organise a multi-product brief.
A reference image communicates style but may not explain how the box is made.
Specify whether you need a folding carton, a rigid lid-and-base box, a drawer box or a magnetic gift box. If you want recommendations, request separately labelled options with a price for each.
Material descriptions should also be specific. A black premium box might use black printing with matte lamination or a naturally textured black specialty paper. These approaches can differ in appearance, feel and cost.
Ask the quote to identify the main paper and board, relevant grammage or thickness, printing method and surface finishes. For specialty paper, describe the texture and feel you want to preserve rather than assuming lamination is appropriate.
Distinguish foil stamping, spot UV, embossing and debossing for the logo. If you are still choosing, request separate prices so you can assess the cost of each option.
A price per box may cover only the outer box, or it may include an insert and assembly.
For example, one quote for a magnetic skincare gift box could include a custom EVA insert with a surface covering, while another covers only the outer box. Those unit prices cannot be compared directly.
Specify the insert material, product layout, surface covering and assembly requirements. Tissue paper, seal stickers, sleeves and other accessories should also be clearly included or excluded.
Use the same checklist for every supplier:
| Item | What to confirm |
|---|---|
| Product contents | Photographs, maximum dimensions, filled weights and items per box |
| Box structure and size | Construction, opening method and internal or external dimensions |
| Materials and finishes | Paper, board, printing, logo process and surface treatment |
| Insert and accessories | Material, layout, covering, accessories and assembly |
| Quantity | Quantity for each size and artwork version |
| Samples | Construction, scope of approval, sample fee and courier charges |
| Tooling and setup | Cutting dies, printing plates and other separately charged items |
| Delivery | Named destination, shipping method, included charges and required date |
A total quantity of 1,000 boxes is not enough if it covers several sizes or designs. State the split because different specifications or artwork versions may require separate setup work.
Production costs cover the outer box, insert, printing, finishes, accessories and agreed assembly. Confirm exactly what the quoted unit contains.
Development costs can include structural development, samples, cutting dies, printing plates and other setup work. Ask which charges are one-time, which may recur after a revision or repeat order, and whether any deductions apply under stated conditions.
Do not assume sample tooling can always be reused for mass production. Reuse depends on the sampling method, production process and whether the final specification changes.
Delivery costs need a separate review, including the shipping method, destination and included or excluded charges. An EXW price and a delivered price cover different responsibilities. Align the named delivery terms before comparing the totals.
If freight has not been quoted, mark it as pending rather than treating it as zero.
Samples reduce uncertainty before production, but different samples prove different things.
A structural sample can help confirm dimensions, layout and product removal without representing the final print colour. For a printed or decorated sample, confirm whether its materials and manufacturing method match the intended production specification.
Define the sample specification before approval. Use actual products where possible to check:
Record the approved materials, construction and finishes as a clear production reference.
A three-week lead time needs clarification: does it mean production completion, dispatch or arrival at the destination?
Confirm when the lead time starts, such as final artwork approval, sample approval or receipt of the agreed payment. While dimensions, inserts or artwork are still changing, a provisional schedule should not be treated as a final delivery commitment.
Ask for quotation validity and payment terms. If you change the size, quantity or logo finish, reconfirm both pricing and timing.
If the budget and design requirements do not align, request alternatives and ask how each adjustment affects the project.
A collapsible rigid box may reduce shipping and storage space, but assembly after delivery needs consideration. Insert options should be compared for retention, appearance and assembly work. Removing a decorative process needs an assessment of whether the result still meets the brand's visual requirements.
The most useful comparison shows each option's complete cost and practical performance against the same brief.
